Unlocking the potential of the Local Public Sector: Constraints on development partners

In some cases, the way in which the global development community is structured and organized works against us in unlocking the potential of the local public sector by achieving sustainable solutions at the local level.

Some development agencies are under political pressure to focus on trying to fix the symptoms of underdevelopment in the short run, rather than addressing the underlying obstacles to development in a sustainable manner.

In addition, many development agencies are fragmented into weakly connected silos or stovepipes (such as governance, public financial management and service delivery) which makes it more difficult for development agencies to address the local public sector as a cross-cutting development challenge.

The Local Public Sector Initiative provides technical assistance and training support to international development organizations to strengthen their understanding of the local public sector and to make sure that they 'think global' but 'act local'.
